Instrumental Variables Response to Angrist and Imbens

چکیده

My 1997 JHR paper neither endorsed nor condemned the use of instrumental variables (IV) to estimate the parameters of economic models. Its main goal was to remind readers of some basic points developed in a series of papers with Richard Robb (1985, 1986), We establish that when responses to "treatment" or a policy intervention vary across persons even after conditioning on observable variables (X), a variety of mean treatment effects can be defined. When responses are homogeneous (conditional on X), all mean treatment effects are the same. The "common effect," homogenous response, assumption underlies most currently used econometric methods used to evaluate social programs. When responses to treatment are homogenous, the case for social experiments and instrumental variables is the most persuasive. (Heckman, 1992; Heckman and Smith, 1992, 1993, 1998), When responses to treatment vary across persons, different mean parameters can be defined that answer different economic questions. A variety of interesting policy counterfactuals can be constructed. Social experiments are better suited for recovering some of these parameters than others. In general, identification of different parameters requires different assumptions to justify application of the method of instrumental variables in any instance, or to justify the application of any econometric method. That different parameters in general require different assumptions should not be surprising. There is no universal justification of the method of instrumental variables for identifying all economic parameters. The comment by Angrist and Imbens confuses two ideas that are fruitfully distinguished. The first idea is that every econometric estimator estimates something, provided it converges. Conditions for convergence of the IV estimator are quite weak, and involve invocation of laws of large numbers (see, for example. White, 1984), The second, and more interesting, idea is an economic one. Does the object defined by application of the estimator answer an interesting economic question? In particu-

Estimating Outcome Distributions for Compliers in Instrumental Variables Models

In Imbens and Ingrist (1994), Angrist, Imbens and Rubin (1996) and Imbens and Rubin (1997), assumptions have been outlined under which instrumental variables estimands can be given a causal interpretation as a local average treatment effect without requiring functional form or constant treatment effect assumptions. We extend these results by showing that under these assumptions one can estimate...

The Derivation of a Latent Threshold Instrumental Variables Model

Measuring the causal eeect of a treatment from observational data is often diicult because the treatment status of a subject may be confounded with non-randomized factors, such as those that aaect a subject's choice of treatment. An approach to remedying this problem is through the use of instrumental variables. We extend the instrumental variables framework proposed by Angrist, Imbens and Rubi...

Heterogeneous Treatment Effects: Instrumental Variables without Monotonicity?

Heterogeneous Treatment Effects: Instrumental Variables without Monotonicity? A fundamental identification problem in program evaluation arises when idiosyncratic gains from participation and the treatment decision depend on each other. Imbens and Angrist (1994) were the first to exploit a monotonicity condition in order to identify an average treatment effect parameter using instrumental varia...

Think globally, act globally: An epidemiologist's perspective on instrumental variable estimation.

We appreciated Imbens' summary and reflections on the state of instrumental variable (IV) methods from an econometrician's perspective. His review was much needed as it clarified several issues that have been historically a source of confusion when individuals from different disciplines discussed IV methods. Among the many topics covered by Imbens, we would like to focus on the common choice of...

Estimating and Testing Non-Linear Models Using Instrumental Variables

In many empirical studies, researchers seek to estimate causal relationships using instrumental variables. When few valid instruments are available, researchers typically estimate models that impose a linear relationship between the dependent variable and the endogenous variable, even when the true model is likely to be non-linear. In the presence of non-linearity, ordinary least squares (OLS) ...
